Youth Mobility Scheme (Tier 5) Recent changes
The Youth Mobility Scheme (Tier 5) has now been changed to the ‘Youth Mobility Scheme visa’
You can apply for a Youth Mobility Scheme visa if you:
- want to live and work in the UK for up to 2 years
- are aged 18 to 30
- have £2,530 in savings
- have certain types of British Nationality or are from certain countries or territories listed in the eligibility requirements
How long does it take?
The earliest you can apply for a visa is 6 months before you travel.
As part of your application, you’ll need to prove your identity and provide your documents.
You may need to allow extra time if you need an appointment to do this. You’ll find out if you need one when you start your application.
Getting a decision
Once you’ve applied online, proved your identity and provided your documents, you’ll usually get a decision on your visa within 3 weeks.
How much it costs
You will need to:
- pay the application fee. The application fee is £259.
- pay the healthcare surcharge, which is usually £470 per year - you can check how much you’ll have to pay
- prove you have enough personal savings - check how much in the eligibility requirements
How long you can stay
You’ll be given a visa to live and work in the UK for up to 24 months.
You can enter the UK at any time while your visa is valid, and leave and come back at any time during your stay.
If you turn 31 after your visa is issued, you can stay in the UK for as long as your visa is valid.
What you can and cannot do
You can:
- study - for some courses you’ll need an Academic Technology Approval Scheme certificate
- work in most jobs
- be self-employed and set up a company - as long as your premises are rented, your equipment is not worth more than £5,000 and you do not have any employees
You cannot:
- work as a professional sportsperson (for example as a coach)
- extend your stay
- get public funds
- bring in family members on your application - they must apply separately
Right to work checks

For those looking to work on a Youth Mobility scheme visa, the changes to the right to work checks will be essential to know.
In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the UK Government issued new guidance surrounding right-to-work checks. They made the process easier for employers who transitioned to remote working.
From March 2020, employers could carry out right-to-work checks remotely, over video calls. Rather than asking for original documents, employers could ask job applicants and workers to scan or photograph their documents.
This policy came to an end on 30 September 2022.
From 1 October 2022, employers must now carry out right-to-work checks using one of these methods:
- Manually checking the person’s original documents.
- Via the Home Office’s online checking service.
- Via an Identification Document Validation Technology (IDVT). This is an identity service to verify identity remotely, without providing physical documents.

Skilled Worker Visa

The Skilled Worker visa category replaces the Tier 2 (General) visa as the main immigration route for skilled workers under the UK’s new Points-Based Immigration System.
As the Freedom of Movement from the EU ended on 31 December 2020, both EU and non-EU citizens are now subject to the same immigration rules. All foreign nationals coming to work in the UK must now apply for permission in advance.
In order to apply for a visa under the Skilled Worker route, migrants need to hold a job offer from an approved sponsor at the required skill and salary level.
Permanent Residency
You may qualify for permanent residency after you have lived legally in the UK for a certain length of time.
This is known as indefinite leave to remain. In most cases, qualifying for settlement is possible on completion of five years’ residence in the UK.
We will support you every step of the way. Make your enquiry today to see how we can offer our expertise.

The Global Talent visa is for talented and promising people who wish to work in specific sectors such as sciences, the humanities, engineering, the arts and technology.
